Smooth curves in Photoshop

While trying to make a smooth curves in Photoshop, I found a tutorial on how actually to make them. But is seems much easier, instead of using Pen tool, just draw the rectangle of a needed color, choose Direct Selection tool to select path of this rectangle,add some extra anchor points to it (like every quarter of the length) and just curve away.
